Shadow Flame Mechanics
Many bosses in Blackwing Lair have a breath attack that deals Shadow Flame damage. Shadow Flame damage is special because it has a secondary effect: if a player takes Shadow Flame damage and they are not wearing an Onyxia Scale Cloak (or in SoD, alternatively wielding Suzerain), then that player will also receive a secondary DoT which will kill them.
On Nefarian, on top of his normal breath being Shadow Flame, there is an additional scripted sequence during the Phase 1 -> Phase 2 transition where the entire arena is engulfed in Shadow Flame. The only safe spot is behind his throne, on the elevated platform.
All players must either have an Onyxia Scale Cloak equipped, be hiding behind the throne, or accept near-instant death during this event.
Nefarian is a multi-phase boss. Phase 1 consists of trash waves. Once enough trash is killed (42 enemies, tracked with DBM), Nefarian will blanket the entire battlefield with a breath that kills anyone not wearing an Ony cloak.
After breathing on the arena, Nefarian will land and Phase 2 begins. He has traditional dragon mechanics:
- Shadow Flame: Conal breath in front of Nefarian, in the direction of whoever is currently tanking him. See Shadow Flame note above. Defensive CDs (both internal and external) and Priest barriers will help tanks survive.
- Tail Lash: Typical dragon tail whip. Don’t stand behind him or you’ll be knocked around. This also temporarily Disarms you.
- Veil of Shadow: Cast on the tank periodically. This is basically a Mortal Strike, but it can (and should immediately be) decursed.
- Bellowing Roar: Raid-wide Fear. The main tank must be consistently buffed with Fear Ward by Priests, or Nefarian may turn and breath on the raid, which without Ony Cloaks will instantly kill them.
At around 20% health, Nefarian will resurrect all of the trash that was killed in Phase 1, which will now swarm the raid as undead mobs. Your offtank should round them up and drag them under the boss, where the raid can cleave them down.
Class Calls
Once Phase 2 has begun, every 30 seconds, Nef will pick a random class (any class available to that faction, not based on who’s actually in the raid) and there will be a themed mechanic involving that class that affects the raid. If Black Trial is enabled, each Class Call also has an extra secondary effect. These bonus mechanics are identical to SoM. The full Class Calls are:
Druid Class Call
All Druids are forced into Cat Form for the duration of the call.
If your main tank is a Druid, it may be wise to have an offtank take the boss during this call.
Black Trial Extra Effect
Entangling Roots will roam around the battlefield and ensnare anyone they come into contact with.
Hunter Class Call
Weapon equipped in your Ranged slot is instantly broken. Hunters must unequip their weapons prior to any Class Call going out, and re-equip after the Call starts. Bring backup weapons just in case!
Black Trial Extra Effect
Bows come out of each Hunter that act like turrets, firing laser beams in lines that are clearly coreographed. Dodge the lasers.
Mage Class Call
Mages are forced to cast Wild Polymorph on random raid members, polymorphing them.
Black Trial Extra Effect
Staves come out of each Mage that cast Arcane Explosion on the battlefield.
Paladin Class Call
Nefarian forces all Paladins to spam Blessing of Protection on him, making him immune to physical damage. Preemptively keep this ability on cooldown to ensure Nef doesn’t get bubbled.
Black Trial Extra Effect
Hammers come out of Paladins that roam the battlefield and cast Consecrate.
Priest Class Call
Direct healing spells will apply stacks of Corrupted Healing on their target, damaging them instead of healing them. Only direct spells apply Corrupted Healing - Renew and Power Word: Shield are safe.
Black Trial Extra Effect
Staves will roam the raid and cast Mind Flay.
Rogue Class Call
All Rogues are teleported and immobilized in front of Nefarian.
The tank must turn the boss or our stealthy lads will shrimply perish.
If your main tank is a Rogue and you have other non-tank Rogues in the raid, this is an ideal time to have an offtank take the boss instead, rotating him away.
Black Trial Extra Effect
Daggers will roam the raid and Slice and Dice.
Shaman Class Call
Nefarian starts gaining Corrupted Totems, buffing him with Windfury and Fire Nova. Kill his totems ASAP.
Black Trial Extra Effect
Lightning balls will bounce around and cause arcs in a small area wherever they land. Avoid the arcs.
Warlock Class Call
Each Warlock will summon 2 hostile Corrupted Infernals. These will stun and do damage to the raid. They’re weak, but immune to fire damage. Focus them down.
Black Trial Extra Effect
Staves will appear near each Warlock and cast AoE Death Coil projectiles that must be dodged by the raid.
Warrior Class Call
All Warriors are forced into Berserker Stance and take 30% increased damage for the duration of the call.
If the main tank is a warrior, this can be extremely dangerous and will require plentiful healing to keep them up. Be mindful of threat.
Black Trial Extra Effect
Giant swords will roam the arena and Whirlwind the raid.
Once Nefarian is dead, additional chests will spawn near his throne with any bonus loot applicable to you mentioned at the start of this guide.
See you in Ahn’Qiraj!
