Molten Core Guide
Last updated: 7/12/26
Molten Core in Season of Discovery is a weekly lockout (resets Tuesday). It’s tuned for 20 players, but accepts up to 40 players. Loot does not change based on player count, which means the more players you bring, the easier it is to kill each boss, but the less loot each player will receive on average.
In SoD, MC has three difficulty levels you can switch between - Heat Level 1, 2, and 3. You can change the current Heat Level at will by talking to the NPC at the start of the instance.
- Bosses have (mostly) their same vanilla mechanics.
- There is no Fire Resist requirement.
- Each boss drops 3 pieces of loot on average.
- Bosses have small changes to their mechanics.
- There is a 96+ Fire Resist requirement.
- Each boss drops 4 pieces of loot on average.
- Bosses have more punishing changes to their mechanics.
- There is a 226+ Fire Resist requirement.
- Each boss drops 5 pieces of loot on average.
- Weapons that drop will have “Molten” effects.
- If all bosses are killed on Heat Level 3, there is an additional 11th boss after Ragnaros.
All players must meet the fire resist requirement throughout the fight or they’ll take massive periodic ticks of damage. Wowhead has a decent guide on different sources of fire resist to help meet this threshold. Tier 1 armor also comes with built-in fire resist to help you gear up.
As most bosses are similar to their vanilla counterparts, this guide will mostly focus on the changes to each boss at each Heat Level. If you have never raided Molten Core before, I recommend reading guides elsewhere to provide that base level of knowledge; most fights are “vanilla with tweaks” rather than wholly different.
